Acceptance is a beautiful thing. It's that time in your life when you stop fighting, you let go of the stories and the expectations and the grief, and you accept. You see that it is what it is. You even begin to find the joy in it all.
And acceptance is often what we want – and are told we should get.
But you can't rush acceptance. You can't hurry through your feelings and your grief, no matter what everyone around you is saying. To arrive fully at acceptance and gratitude, you have to take your time. Too often though, we don't allow this.
In this episode, I speak with mama and author Melanie Dimmitt. Melanie experienced what many of us would describe as our greatest fear: a birth that resulted in a severely disabled child. Melanie's had to learn what true acceptance means, as her whole world and identity was shifted.
In this episode, she shares not only her own story, but the 50 other parents of children with various disabilities she interviewed around the world to better understand what was happening to her and her family. Her book – Special – is a collection of those nuggets of wisdom.
